The article showing what is being done against what should be done. And I think it raises a question - do we really care?
There are certain things on the world that will make you think. And usually when someone asks you 'would you kill someone just to have new runners', or 'would you sacrifice someone's life so that you could live just a bit more luxurious' you would probably say no. Well the facts claim otherwise... Here are just some comparisons (not sorted in any way, just noted): Case 1 - Take my ass to space
What they could have done ? Let's see. Hmm... Well for starters let's feed some people. Here are some facts
So we have 30 million dollars in our hands. What can we do with them ? Well since $240 feeds twenty hungry families for a month, we can fairly easy say that you could feed about 125 000 hungry FAMILIES for a month. Wanna feed them for longer ? 62 500 families for 2 months, 31250 families for 4 months. 20 850 families for half a year. So instead of flying your but in circles for a few days you could feed 20 850 families for HALF A YEAR. Case 2 - I wanna see the world !
And guess what' they? They don't have problems filling them ! What they could have done ? According to the charity website that is building schools in Africa:
1 British pound = 1.9619 U.S. Note that. So instead of having some expensive as hell vacation for every two days you would stay there you could build a school in Africa. Case 3 - Get me from point A to point B
What they could have done ?
So tell me, what do you think about this, is hunger still unsolveable problem ? I think not - if the rich dudes decide it's time to solve the hunger problem they could solve it - in 24 hours.

Just read darwins comment and cant actually believe his comment got 10 votes. What an ill informed opinion. One of the main reasons that the western world is so much more developed than the third world is because we raped and pillaged Africa for all it was worth. The main trades and industries which propelled us ahead of Africa at our crucial time in deveopment were Tobacco, cotton and slavery industries. We got over 400 years of free labour out of them and now in the modern era our banks have sanctioned their governments with interest payments on their 'debt'. The reason we are so 'rich' in the first place is because we trampled the African nation and its people since we met them. All this article is saying is look how far we have come. Look at the difference between our greed and the fact that most peoplle in Africa cant even get basic human neccesaties like food, shelter and water.

while it is true that money "wasted" in luxuries and extravagant pursuits could have helped people in 3rd world countries who are in real need, you overlook the fact that you dont live for them; you live for yourself, you do what makes you feel good. you get this life only once, and someday you will die and your life will be as insignificant as any bug's or animal's life in the grand scheme of things. so instead of worrying you head about how you could help people with your money, i suggest you use that money to do whatever you want even if that means spending it on things like those shown above.

While I do agree that people should help the less fortunate, you seem to think that the money people spend on luxuries just vanishes after it's spent. But that money pays engineers, hotel workers, car makers, etc.

oh and one more thing that I have to mention - the POINT of this post wasn't let's all help the Africa people. It was help the people that need helping. Example 1 is worldwide, example 2 is Africa related, example 3 is worldwide (picture in example is from Bosnia and Herzegovina) - there are many people around the world that need a helping hand

thx for the heads up about the but it slipped my finger (English isn't my primary language but I try to work on it as much as I can) anyway dunno what you people think but for example I work as a volunteer in the center for helping the people with disabilities (read with Down's syndrome and similar stuff) and I would really like to look into the psychology of the rich people and try to determine at which point they stopped caring. To the dude that goes around saying "they earned their money so let them keep it" - fine But what you're saying is that if I won the lotto I should help anyone than myself - cause I won it not you. And that just freaking selfish and kinda of egoistic (scrw the world if I'm fine). To the man that stated that I'm a communist - you're an idiot. Sorry I had to say that. The fact that I say that wealthy SHOULD help the poor doesn't make me a communist you ignorant man. To the people that said teach them to fish - I know you meant it like metaphorically but let me put it this way - you try being taught to fish when you don't have where to fish OR from what to make a fishing rod. I'm not actually saying that we should go and raid the wealthy people's houses or something. I just say that by my opinion they should help the less fortunate - SINCE THEY CAN DO IT. At the dude that said that we could STFU - you do that I don't plan doing that and no one can stop me. I always at least try and feel good for it. And you go around kidding yourself that you can't do nothing I REALLY hate to see J's comment rated so low, makes me actually ask myself what kind of readers do I have on this blog To the author that said that you can't go to Africa and give them cash cause their governments will keep it for themselves - google it. True to some point but not the whole way. While I was doing research on the topic I was actually stunned by the thing people managed to do. With small donations they are making a school in Africa every few months, not much but it's a start. p.s. Every big change is a result of many small changes. Don't give up, never stop trying that's my motto and you can expect more articles like this to appear here I can alway criticize something that I don't like - it's the main feature of democracy that's why I don't moderate comments here report abuse

I grew up a very poor child. My mother worked her ass off so that I would have just something to eat. Sometimes, it wasn't enough. We never had nice things. I worked my ASS off! I made excellent grades, got a great education so that I could get a nice job so my children wouldn't have to worry about not having dinner. BECAUSE I worked my ass off, I have nice things and I can afford a lot of things. Screw that children in Africa, I'm helping my own damned country men. You won't see me ever drive a $300,000 car...because I'd rather build my own damn car. Someone above said teach them to fish...I agree whole heartedly. Some say that if you're born into poverty, you can't get out because of some psychological/social reasons. SCREW YOU! I work hard at my job, even now. I EARN my money. STFU to all the rich people haters. They donate more to charity than anyone else. That same person paying $8,000 a night for his hotel probably also donated well over $100,000 to charity in that same year. report abuse

I don't call that the voice of logic actually. Assuming folks that are better off always earn it is not realistic. Assuming someone is poor because they refuse to work is equally unrealistic. While I agree that we should focus more on our homeland than others, I also agree that no one actually needs a $250,000 vehicle to get from point A to B. It's always worth giving someone a second chance in life when fate hands them nothing. Does a child born to a poor family, unable to change the fact that he doesn't have a roof over his head mean he deserves to freeze to death slowly in the winter while a child born to royalty sits by a fire thinking of nothing but the next toy?

"Give a man a fish a he'll eat for a day; Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime". Seriously... people need to go in and help a country on the right track and then leave them the hell alone. I don't want my tax dollars that I earn everyday going to the people who are too lazy and worthless to get off their lazy ass and get a real job instead of having lots of kids and just knowing that welfare will take care of them and their kids for the rest of their lives. I say: Teach them how to do it themselves. Then they can make their own damn money. report abuse

first, many sports celebs do earn their money. They train year round with incredible hours put into their work. They fly from one place to the next everyday and while many might think traveling would be great im sure it gets tiring. i would be willing to bet that nobody here criticizing them would say football two-a-days are fun and just a game, they're brutal. Pro athletes work much harder than the average person, many people just dont consider physical labor work.

Second i agree we flaunt our wealth too much. The person in this article is not saying buying anything for ourself is bad, they are saying excessive spending. Their are plenty of vary nice hotels you can stay in for under $8000 and plenty of nice cars under $225,000. and a space trip really??? the author makes us all feel uncomfortable thats why so many people on this blog dont like the article. report abuse

Well lets just ask ourselfs this question, is it really our responsibility to help these people in other countrys? I mean come the fuck on, we need to focus on our selfs before we go playing mother tereasa across the whole planet. I dont know how many homeless kids there are in america but im sure its up to par with these other "third world nations" who stil magicaly have rich people there. If we stop helping the world, yes people are going to die, but at least the blood is not on our hands.

This post is ridiculous. Rich people should not be lambasted for their lifestyle, some of them worked really hard to be where they have gotten today. Sure, if money was unethically acquired or retained then indict the person and donate the money. Those who DO have money are more expected to give back to the COMMUNITY because most of the time, the community is why they made all their money. America still has problems, lets work on ours before we work on others because it is a lot easier to point the finger anywhere but back at yourself.

This Blog is another idea not well thought out. Helping the "poor" is not as easy as this person would like it to be. Most the the "poor" people that are pointed out live in countries that will not allow others to help. Every time you send aid to them, thier governments keep it for thier own gain.

You cannot simply fly over and drop food or money. The act of flying in thier airspace is an act of war. Think back to the recent weather problems in Burma, or w/e they call them selves. We tried to help but they wouldn't allow it. The only way to feed these people is to topple thier horrible governments. It does no good trying to make "rich" people feel bad. report abuse

First let me point out that, professional ball players i.e. football, basketball, baseball are paid millions of dollars for no reason. Who cares that they can catch a ball. Our teachers, soldiers, police and firemen, do not make enough money to live off of without a second job. That is sad. I have no respect for these people who flaunt their money. At least Bill Gates is doing something worthwile with his.

voice in reason? ^ I doubt it.. It makes sense to think along the lines of both sides.. Granted anyone should be able to spend "their" money.. 1)that most rich people dont "earn" their money - take sports celebs for example- they earn way too much for playing A GAME, A GAME!. . 2)yes if you have the money you should be able to spend it how you want. 3)its not survival of the fittest in the sence of "oh your poor you can die and let us rich people live!" its not their fault that natural disasters occur, or that their government are a wast of space and make sure they get all the money and luxury while their people starve and die. 4)if it was you that was in their situation you would be mad that we have money, food, clean water, shelter and medical care and we take it for granted. 5)this world is so messed up and i persoanlly think humans are parasites! report abuse

Look, no one's saying that being rich requires one to spend all their money or all their time helping people that aren't. But honestly, society's reached a point where vanity has become more important than the common good. No one enjoys knowing that there are people starving or dying around the world because they're poor. Not to mention the fact that many of the people are dying because of oppression, drought, lack of a strong enough market to make money and the overall ability to get themselves or their families out of a difficult spot.
Votes: +6
Often, the rich run out of things to do, to buy, to show off, and they get bored. So, we make bigger and "better" things for them to spend it on. People pay between $60,000-$200,000 to climb everest, a place where they could easily take one slip and die. It's time to make some changes and sort out our priorities. Why shouldn't that money go to things that are worthwhile? Why shouldn't those who are able to help do so? When a firefighter sees someone trapped in a burning building it's his duty, not just to his job, but to the common good to do something about it. That's what we're dealing with here, a fire, and those with the ability to do something about it. report abuse

Hate to be the voice of logic here, but the rich earned their money, why the hell should they have to pay for the people who didn't? Shouldn't they be able to enjoy their earnings?

It's called survival of the fittest. The reason most of the world is struggling is because we keep helping them, but only just enough to keep them struggling. One thing or the other: Either teach the struggling portion of the world how to help themselves so we don't have to keep doing it, or stop helping them so the population will thin out and those of us who are capable of providing for ourselves will have an easier time of it. Hate to sound cold and inhuman, but we're the ones keeping the problem around. report abuse

So the rich people are going crazy about space flight. Oh that's nice, you'll say for yourself. Of course it is, you're building space ships while half of your planet is starving. How humane of you. Quoting The Times:
Ten million people die every year of hunger and hunger-related diseases.
Sure, we all do. Well more or less. So let's spend a night in the middle east ! Cool, not a problem. But here's where the rich man mentality jumps in and they say - WAIT why should we go to some normal hotel when we can go to a vVIP (standing for VERY very important person) hotel and pay at minimum well, let me quote:
So wealthy people drive expensive cars. Fine. How expensive ? Well let's just say that the low class players (read small VIPs) buy their cars starting at minimum of 250 000$ (for example an Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible costs $363,990 and we know that there ar much more expensive cars than that). So the cars with normal prices are just no good enough. You have to have the ability to drive faster than 200mph. It doesn't really matter that you will never drive your car that fast - it only matter that you CAN do it.
I'll be simple here. $500 Furnishes a home for a downtrodden family. You could furnish about 500 homes per 1 car. Nice isn't it?
(English isn't my primary language but I try to work on it as much as I can)
and no one can stop me. I always at least try and feel good for it. And you go around kidding yourself that you can't do nothing
